January 20,1956- Celtics and Hawks tie NBA record for combined point total, Mikan returns to Boston

It was a high scoring day of basketball at the Boston Garden with offense being the word of the day. In the 1st game of a doubleheader at the Boston Garden, George Mikan made his return to the Boston Garden with the Minneapolis Lakers. Mikan in his return did not play like the Mikan of old scoring only 2 points on 1 for 12 shooting, and picking up 5 fouls as his Lakers fell to the Knicks 122-109. The Knicks 122 points set a franchise record for points in a game. The Knicks led the game the entire way with Gene Shue scoring 22 points, with 21 of them in the 1st half, and Kenny Sears was the man in the 2nd half with 18 of his 27 points coming in the 2nd half. Clyde Lovellette led the Lakers with 27 points and Whitey Skoog had 18.

In the feature game of the doubleheader the Boston Celtics beat the St. Louis Hawks 133-112. The 245 points tied a NBA record for combined point total, while the Celtics set a franchise record with 133 points. The Celtics offense was flowing the entire game as they connected on 51 out of 106 shots. The Celtics improved their season record to 23-15.
