February 10,1956- Celtics trounce Hawks, Lapchick honored at Boston Garden

In a doubleheader of basketball in front of 9000 fans at the Boston Garden the Boston Celtics raced out to an early lead and beat the St. Louis Hawks 124-100. In the early game the Syracuse Nationals beat the New York Knicks 94-88 in Joe Lapchick's last game as Knicks coach. The Knicks started out strong taking a 46-38 halftime lead. Ed Conlin of the Nats who was scoreless in the 1st half picked up steam in the 2nd half scoring all of his 18 points in the 2nd half. Earl Lloyd, Ed Conlin, and Dolph Schayes scored 22 of the Nats 24 4th quarter points for the Nats to put the Knicks away. Jim Baechtold of the Knicks led all scorers with 27 points.

In between the doubleheader games the Knicks coach Joe Lapchick who had just coached his last NBA game was presented to the Boston crowd and he received a resounding ovation. He was given a woodworking kit by the basketball writers and broadcasters, and Walter Brown the president and owner of the Boston Garden and Boston Celtics gave Lapchick a set of golf clubs.

In the 2nd game the Boston Celtics came out strong to beat the Hawks 124-100. The Celtics never trailed in the game while playing their starters sparingly. The rout was on early as the Celtics led by 24 in the 2nd period. Bill Sharman was the outstanding player shooting 12 for 16 from the field, 6 for 6 from the line and scoring 30 points. The Celtics record for the season was brought to 30-24.
