14,280 fans at Madison Square Garden saw a fine day as basketball as the New York Knicks battled to beat the Boston Celtics 113-102 in the 2nd game of a NBA doubleheader. With 4 minutes remaining in the 1st half the Knicks trailed the Celtics 46-39. Gene Shue would lead a Knicks charge scoring 7 points in the final minutes of the 1st half as the Knicks went on a 15-2 run to take a 54-48 halftime lead. The Knicks hot streak continued into the 2nd half as they quickly took a 69-53 lead and the Knicks would lead by no less than 10 for the rest of the game. Bill Sharman was one of the few bright spots for the Celtics in the game as he led all scorers with 29 points. The Celtics record dropped to 28-23.
In the earlier game of the doubleheader the Philadelphia Warriors whipped the Syracuse Nationals 128-96. The Warriors set a MSG record with 128 points. The Warriors led 101 to 73 at the end of the third quarter. The 101 points set a league record for points after 3 quarters. The Warriors led 70-51 at the half setting a MSG record. Neil Johnston scored 41 points for the Warriors, 29 of them in the 1st half setting a MSG record. Paul Arizin scored 26 for the Warriors.
